タルムード　The Talmud

この言葉を知ったのは数年前。

たまたま知り合いだった人がすごい勢いで昇進してさらに新しい事業も始めた。

こう聞くと物凄く頭が切れて気が利く人を想像するかもしれないけど実際イメージは大分違う。

全然ガツガツしてなくてむしろぽわっとしている。

この人はなんでこんなに成功したのだろうか？と疑問に思ったことが「タルムード」を知るきっかけになった。

仮にここではAさんとする。

Aさんは元々ユダヤ系の人らしい。

そういえば世界のトップ企業の創業者や社長にはユダヤ系が多い。

パッと調べた情報によると、世界人口の0.2%しかいないものの世界の富の約40%はユダヤ系の人が築いたとか。ノーベル賞受賞者にも多いみたい。

この人たちの共通点ってなんだろう？と思って調べたら彼らは生きる知恵として「タルムード」を学んでいることがわかった。

ここに書かれていることには確かに頷ける部分が多くある。

「可能な限り身なりを整えなさい。外見は思った以上に重要です。」

この言葉は大人になってから痛感する。

仕事をする時に第一印象で8割ぐらいの印象が定まる。そしてその直感は大体当たる。

この言葉は顔の造形を言っているのではなく、洋服の値段を言っているわけでもない。

気を遣えているか、気を配れているか？ということを表していると思う。

「お金は選択肢と自由を得る」

この言葉も心の底から理解できる。

仕事をしていれば理不尽なことが度々起こる。会社勤めは理不尽の塊だと思うこともある。

でも十分な貯金があれば嫌な上司がいた時に会社にしがみつかずにスパッと辞める、という”選択”ができる。

「収入は減るけど好きだから」という理由で自分が心から好きなことを仕事にできるかもしれない。

こういうのって実際に自分がそういう場面に遭遇したり見聞きしてきたからこそ深く理解できる。

ChatGPT、AIと凄まじい勢いで新しい技術が現れるこの世の中だからこそ、改めて先人たちが残した知恵を学ぶ意味があるのかもしれない。

I first learned this word a few years ago.

Someone I happened to know was promoted at an incredible pace and even went on to start a new business.

Hearing that, you might imagine someone extremely sharp and quick-witted, but in reality, the image was quite different.

They weren’t aggressive at all—if anything, they had a soft, laid-back vibe.

Wondering, “How did this person become so successful?” was what led me to learn about the Talmud.

Let’s call this person A.

A is apparently of Jewish descent.

Come to think of it, many founders and CEOs of the world’s top companies are Jewish.

According to some quick research, although Jewish people make up only about 0.2% of the world’s population, they are said to have created around 40% of the world’s wealth. There also seem to be many Nobel Prize winners among them.

I started wondering what they all had in common, and when I looked into it, I learned that they study the Talmud as a source of practical wisdom for life.

There are many things written there that really make sense.

“Dress as well as you possibly can. Appearance is more important than you think.”

This is something you truly realize once you become an adult.

When you’re working, about 80% of the impression you make is decided by first impressions—and that intuition is usually correct.

This doesn’t mean facial features, nor does it mean the price of your clothes.

I think it refers to whether you are considerate, whether you pay attention to details.

“Money gives you choices and freedom.”

I can understand this from the bottom of my heart.

If you work, unfair situations happen all the time. Sometimes it feels like being a company employee is unfairness itself.

But if you have sufficient savings, when you have a terrible boss, you can make the choice to quit cleanly instead of clinging to your job.

You might even be able to turn something you truly love into your work, saying, “My income will go down, but I like it.”

These things are deeply understood only because you’ve actually encountered such situations yourself or seen and heard about them firsthand.

In a world where new technologies like ChatGPT and AI are emerging at a tremendous pace, perhaps that’s exactly why it’s meaningful to once again learn the wisdom left behind by those who came before us.
