There was an article like this in today’s newspaper.
If graduate programs become one year long, dormitory and tuition costs would be lower, so the rate of students going on to graduate school might increase.
It said that universities might design curriculums that let students start learning graduate-level material during their undergraduate years and finish the program in just one year.
In the department I graduated from, students in their 3rd and 4th undergraduate years and 1st year of graduate school generally have a bit of free time, so maybe it’s not impossible!
Also, since many graduate programs overseas are one year long, maybe Japan could make it work too…!?
(But on the other hand, if programs abroad can be completed in one year, why does Japan need two…?)
Still, I wonder if this would really increase the number of students continuing on to grad school.
Recently, even among those who go on to science or engineering graduate programs, many end up working in jobs unrelated to their research, so it’s hard to say what will happen.
And for fields like chemistry or mechanical engineering, which require a lot of lab work, I can’t help but wonder if there’d even be enough time physically. There are a lot of questions.
