Continuing from last week, here’s more on this topic. (Check out last week’s post here! ↓)

I finished the Shibuya–Omotesando Women’s Run! ①

Training up to race day

For over seven years, I had been doing strength training for one hour and running for 30 minutes, three times a week, so I kept that routine unchanged. After deciding to participate in the race, whenever I went to the gym on weekends, I added another 30 minutes of running to that program.
My usual running pace was 9.5 km/h for 30 minutes, so by doing two sets, I was able to cover a distance close to what I’d run in the actual race.
I also increased the incline to add more intensity. In the end, I only managed to do this kind of running about three times before race day.
Other than that, I checked last year’s race footage and key tips on YouTube and Instagram.
One comment that really stuck with me was:
“I participated for the first time last year. I only managed to run 10 km a few times before the event, but on the day, I was able to finish because everyone around me was running too, which kept me going.”
Ideally, I should have trained more before entering, but since race day was approaching and I still didn’t feel confident, that comment gave me some reassurance.
And in reality, on the day of the race, I really did get carried along by the people around me and managed to finish with relative ease ⭐️

Race Day (Before the Start)

The guide recommended arriving about 1.5 hours early, and since it was my first time participating in an event like this, I made sure to get there with plenty of time to spare.

As for what to wear, I simply threw something on over my running outfit and headed to the venue.

There were quite a lot of people at the venue, and many were gathered around the sponsor booths.

Looking back, here are a few things I wish I had known:

  • If you want face paint, it’s better to line up early since there can be a queue. (I only waited a few minutes and was able to get mine done!)
  • There was an event where you could receive a scrunchie by taking a photo at the photo booth and posting it on social media, so if you want one, it’s probably best to line up early for that as well.
  • If there are samples you want from sponsor booths, it’s a good idea to grab them right after finishing the above.
  • Other than that, there’s no need to rush—you can take your time♪
  • Restrooms get extremely crowded right before the start, and if you get stuck in line too long, you may end up starting from the back. So it’s best to go at a reasonable time beforehand.
It seems your time is measured by a chip, so even if you’re not at the very front, your personal time will still be recorded!

The Start

And finally, the race began! There were so many people around that I couldn’t quite run at my desired pace. (At turns especially, it felt pretty congested.) But the cheers from the crowd were amazing, and running outdoors felt great—it really lifted my mood!

There were three hydration stations along the course. At the last one, they were also handing out salt tablets, so I grabbed some of those too 👌

Apparently, this event is one of the rare occasions when you’re allowed to run through Meiji-Jingu, which gave the whole experience a special, almost sacred atmosphere—it felt incredible!

There was a short gravel path where it felt like my footing was slipping a bit, but aside from that, I was able to run fairly comfortably.

The course overall had quite a few ups and downs, which made it tough, but I kept telling myself, “It’s all in your head!” and pushed through, haha.

The support from spectators was also amazing. People were cheering things like, “This is the last part of the hill!” and “Just one more turn and you’re at the finish!”—it really helped me mentally and kept me going.

The Finish

Toward the end, I felt confident that I would be able to finish within the time limit. But once I saw the finish line, I sprinted with everything I had left, as if giving it my all to the very end! It felt amazing—such a great rush and sense of accomplishment!

Even though it was “just” 10 km, I’m really glad I pushed myself and took on the challenge. It was totally worth it.

After Finishing

I got a leg massage at the massage area, then grabbed a smoothie and picked up some of the sponsor items I couldn’t get in the morning.

The smoothie line was pretty long, but the people around me started chatting, and I even got to hear about other races and events they had participated in.

There was also an after-party planned, but I was pretty exhausted, so I headed home, haha.

Overall, it was a very satisfying event. I’d love to join again next year 🌟
