I guess you could say I’m more of a minimalist. I don’t have a very strong desire for material things.
But that wasn’t always the case.
During COVID, I started cleaning my house more, and I realized that I actually need far fewer things than I thought.
(Especially during the pandemic, when there were fewer events and fewer chances to go out, that may have influenced how I felt.)
What really struck me while cleaning was that managing and letting go of things is much harder than buying them.
Occasionally, some things become more valuable over time, but most items lose their value to me because they deteriorate with age or my tastes change.
There are also many things I loved so much that I barely used them, trying to keep them in good condition, only to end up throwing them away.
And when it’s time to let things go, I feel a bit guilty putting items that are still usable into a trash bag.
(Though it would be great if they could reach someone who wants them on メルカリ! Haha.)
Clothes are especially strange—when I have too many, I feel like I have nothing to wear, but the moment I reduce them, suddenly everything left is something I want to wear. (Why!?)
Maybe it also clears up my thinking, because I’ve stopped making impulse purchases. With fewer belongings, cleaning is easier too, so I can keep my room tidy all the time.
At first, I just started with the simple thought, “Maybe I should clean up my house.” But it turned out to have many unexpected benefits.
I once saw on TV that if you keep your house tidy enough to welcome anyone at any time, good fortune will come in as well. I used to think that sounded a bit spiritual, but maybe there’s actually a practical reason behind it, like the ones above.
I’ll keep doing my best to maintain a clean and tidy home from now on too ⭐️
